Thread: In what language Dutch surf the web?

Just out of curiosity.

Holland is on of the EU nation where almost everybody speaks English and i was wonder if people surf for porn more in Dutch or in English.

If you are a Dutch webmaster which language would you consider first when building a site?

Interesting question...i would presume they surf for Porn in Dutch. As far as i know Dutch grow up fully bilinguals.

really difficult question..

when i build a website i think out of the box but many dutch webmasters don't do that..

but the first pages on google netherlands are .nl domains so many traffic is going there. and if you want to score in google netherlands your content and domain has to be dutch and .NL

the english language is pretty good with the dutch.. any other language is pretty bad with the dutch people. Yes many are surfing in dutch because they provide phone billing because many (85%) dutchies don't have a credit card


Every computer comes with a dutch OS too, so the searches will automatically be filtered in dutch. So even if the surfer types in an english keyword it's very likely to see a .nl site rank high on it.

When it comes to webmasters, I think that's hard to say. Everyone chooses his own path, some decide to go local and some (like me) go world wide.
this is correct many webmasters in NL think inside of the box not many are thinking or combining the dutch language with foreign programs. but this has also to do with the credit card issue

It's not that difficult... Just answer the question, which market is bigger ?
Most of the dutch people speak english, and many speak German.

I think they surf both english and dutch sites. When looking at all the dutch sites, most of them are the same, using the same content and providers. Porn surfers will get bored with the dutch content easily and eventually will move forward to see what they can get on a bigger scale. However the dutch surfer often doesn't have a creditcard, if you have an english paysite make it clear that you also have other payment options as well....

I suggest when building sites, try to use all markets, build sites in multiple languages if possible. A small side note ... Don't forget spanish, since it is the second most spoken language in the world ! Dutch is just a very small market considering...

We own alot of english sites that are visited by many dutch people, but we make sure we also have dutch sites, so that people will also find us when using dutch keywords in the search engines. Some sites are translated in 6 different languages.

I disagree with the fact that dutch sites should only consider to send traffic to dutch paysites. All of those dutch webmasters do that and I don't understand why most of them would not send their dutch surfers to some of the better quality english sites on the net. There are plenty of international adult sites offering alternative payment methods and some of the bigger ones have translated their sites.
