One-third of Portuguese Couples Keep Online Secrets

YNOT EUROPE – More than one third of Portuguese couples hide details about their online activities from their partners, according to a new Microsoft Portugal survey. Men are more likely to be secretive than women.

Nearly three-quarters of men (73 percent) said they conceal evidence of porn surfing, and 65 percent obscure banking transactions, according to the survey. Forty-nine percent of male survey respondents said they also hide online shopping habits, and 21 percent indicated concern their online gambling habits may be exposed.

Among female respondents, on the other hand, only 43 percent worry their partners will discover they view adult content online, and 35 percent indicated they cover up online shopping.

The study also indicated 64 percent of surfers of both genders consider viruses and other potential security breaches to be the biggest threats on the web. Connection and download speeds, ease of use and privacy ranked second, third and fourth on the combined list of concerns.

The survey followed the release of Internet Explorer 9.0 in February.
